The Airborne Museum "Hartenstein" special attention is paid to the Battle of Arnhem in 1944. The building was formerly a hotel in which the British commander had set up his headquarter. An extensive collection of weapons and uniforms completea the exhibition.
Inside the national park "De Hoge Veluwe" is the Kröller-Müller Museum located. Between 1907 and the thirties Helen Kröller-Müller compiled one of the most important collections of modern art. The collection focusses on works of her favorite painter Vincent van Gogh. In addition, you will find works by Seurat, Picasso, Léger and Piet Mondriaan.
A cultural-historical walking tour through the medieval town center should be part of the visit for weekend vacations, cyclists, cultural tourist or groups. The well-trained tour guides present a vivid picture of the city's history - and open the doors of the Gothic houses.
The moated castle Moyland is one of the most important neo-gothic castles in North Rhine-Westphalia. Since 1997, it is used as a museum and displays important works of art of the 19th and 20th century, covering almost all fields of art. The main collection is the one of the brothers van der Grinten with more than 60,000 works of art and the world's largest collection of works by the artist Joseph Beuys, who was a close friend of two collectors throughout his life. The extensive gardens includes a sculpture park and herb garden. Temporary exhibitions of famous artists, numerous concerts, readings and lectures make Schloss Moyland museum into a cultural centre.
Niederrheinisches Museum für Volkskunde und Kulturgeschichte e.V.
The museum shows the background and development of the major North-western German and Dutch pilgrimage. The permanent exhibition "Ancient Craft" shows the craft of the forge over rope making to glass painting.
The aim of the museum is to tell the story of former British air base Weeze-Laarbruch and document the presence of British military from 1954 to 1999.
For this purpose an wxhibition was setup in the former St. Peter's Church. On display are uniforms, badges, pictures, flags, aircraft models and much more.
Archäologischen Parks Xanten
Wanna stroll through a Roman town? In the vast green of the Archaeological Park Xanten invite the remains of the city "Colonia Ulpia Traiana" to a relaxing trip to the ancient world. The amphitheater, the habour temple and other reconstructions give an impression of life in the former Roman province. The new museum at the Archaeological Park Xanten leads on an exciting journey of discovery through 700 years of history. The building impresses by the volume of the former Roman spa hall and the exhibition presents many never-before-seen original finds from the Roman city and legionary camps. There is much to discover when you visit the excavations or the hands-on activities and craft demonstrations. The Roman restaurant keeps food ready, prepred according to ancient recipes.
Xantener Sommerfestspiele
Since 1983 the Xanten Summer Festival is held each year on each August weekend in the Roman amphitheater in Xanten. The audience can expect a cultural delight consisting of opera, ballet, musicals, operetta and concerts. Tickets are available nationwide at all usual ticket agencies.
Kloster Kamp
Founded in 1123 as the first Cistercian monastery on German soil, it is origin of the district Kamp (from the Latin "campus" = field). You find a wide area with a museum, monasterian cafe and the famous terrace garden. Due to its similarity with Potsdam it is called by hisdtorians "Sanssouci on the Lower Rhine". Founded from here were over a hundred other Cistercian monasteries and other cultural innovations were created. So the monks knew the knowledge to use wind power, far before the first windmill in Holland was established, the first plow, and the foods salad, sauerkraut, the snail and the espaliered fruit trees.
Traktorenmuseum Pauenhof
Germany's largest tractor and farm equipment museum. In a total of 10 halls with an exhibition area of 5000 square meters over 340 tractors are shown. Tractor from Germany and abroad by famous manufacturers and (almost) unknown companies that have built only a few tractors.
In addition all machines can be seen that eased the works on the fields and farms from small devices to combine harvester.
In Issum you can visit the large Altbier (old ale) brewery Diebels, where it has been since 1878. There are several packages available showing you the old ale brewing craft. For sure you can also enjoy an cold freshly drafted beer there. You can learn the theory and practice of the art of tapping and perfect serving of beer.
