The "Via Romana" leads substantially along the old Roman Limes road. The original, ancient Limes road was build in the first century A.D. as a link between the Roman military camps.

The settlement that is now called Xanten was named Colonia Ulpia Traiana, Nijmegen was called Ulpia Noviomagus Batavorum. The Limes road  became a commercial trading road after the collapse of the Roman Empire. The bike route leads through a beautiful natural and cultural landscape.
